Summary:
In Penrose and geisler’s article, reading and writing without authority, they argue that there are differences in authority within the academic sphere. They compare the writing of an academic article by a first year student and a doctoral student. They find that The doctoral student writes with a much better sense of authority because a variety of reasons that they describe in this article.
3. Janet’s method seems to forget the intertext and all of the conversation going on previously before she started talking about the topic. Its called that because she is literally just reading information and regurgitating it whereas Roger knows the conversation and tries to find his place to write, the gap.
4. I think that because she didn’t trust herself because she didn’t know the conversation or the intertext well and couldn’t find a gap, so all she did was repeat what was already said. She said conflicting things because she needed to in some way be credible and that is how most high-schoolers, first year students write; unconfident, and not trusting in their work.
5. I think that in highschool I wrote like Janet because I didn’t have confidence and wasn’t taught to find a gap in my writing. All I could do was read text and copy it into my paper. Now that I have learned to find the conversation and make an argument through my first year English class, I am starting to write more like Roger.
MM: I think that the next time I write I will try to sound more confidant and know my subject well. I will sound more confidant by sounding like I know the conversation that is at play.
Response: I think this article was encouraging because a first year student isn’t supposed to write like a phd student, which I clearly don’t. Becoming a writer with authority comes with time and experience.
I like your response to 5. I also feel this way.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you said in your MM response because I feel the same way about trying to sound more confident and knowing my subject.
